Brief summary of altitude (elevation) related illness:
Acute Mountain Sickness: Fairly common. Symptoms include shortness of breath, headache, nausea, fatigue, elevated HR. Normal or slightly low blood oxygen levels (usually > 80%). Drink plenty of fluids. Ibuprofen (400-600 mg 3-4 times a day) can be effective in prevention and treatment. Oxygen therapy while sleeping is usually adequate.
High Altitude Pulmonary Edema: Less common. Lower blood oxygen levels. Progressive cough, usually wet and often pink colored. Skin color change (blue or purple lips & fingers). Usually with headache, difficulty sleeping, and often nausea. Requires continuous oxygen treatment and / or descent to lower elevation. May require ER evaluation to rule out other illness.
High Altitude Cerebral Edema: Very rare at this elevation. Severe headache, confusion, balance difficulty. Requires immediate oxygen and descent. Call 911.
